Process Design Concepts
Barclays Lab develops modular process design concepts for small-scale industrial manufacturing.
Each concept includes process flow design, equipment specification, and scalable plant layout suitable for specialty production facilities.
Hydrosol Production Facility
Small modular distillation plant designed for hydrosol and essential oil production from botanical materials.

The facility concept includes steam distillation vessels, vapor condensation systems, and modular stainless-steel processing equipment designed for scalable botanical extraction.

Estimated Capacity
500–1500 lb botanical input per batch
Ethanol Distillation System
Compact fermentation and distillation system designed to produce ethanol from sugar-based feedstocks.

The plant concept includes fermentation vessels, a distillation unit with column and condenser, and basic handling systems for small-scale alcohol production. The focus is on understanding how fermentation stability, separation efficiency, and energy usage behave at a manageable scale.

The work explores how such a system would be designed to operate within permitting and compliance requirements, since ethanol distillation requires licensing and approval from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Estimated Capacity
15–30 gallons per day (ethanol)

Beans Processing & Filling Facility
Small-scale processing system designed for pre-cooked bean products including mixing, packaging, and thermal processing.

The concept focuses on modular cooking vessels, mixing tanks, and hygienic filling systems suitable for specialty packaged food production.

Estimated Capacity
1–2 tons per day
